Obverse with bust of George Frederick Handel, reverse with 'Saskatoon Oratorio Society Founded 1913 Canada' within floral wreath. Suspended by two chains on a bar which reads '"Messiah" Saskatoon 1913'. With Mappin & Webb hallmarks to both medal and bar.
About as Struck and attractively toned, housed in Mappin & Webb case of issue. Struck to commemorate the inaugural Saskatoon Oratorio Society presentation of Handel's 'Messiah' and extremely rare with the only other example we can find being in the Saskatoon Oratorio Society collection.
The Saskatoon Oratorio Society presented Handel's Messiah Dec 3 and 4, 1913 at the Third Avenue Methodist Church with nearly 200 voices involved in the production. A review of the event appeared in the Saskatoon Phoenix, Dec 4, 1913. The bust was based on the statue of Handel from Vauxhall Gardens. In 1741 Handel wrote the "Messiah" oratorio working on it non-stop for 23 days.
