BHM 301.
43mm. Silver. By J. Hancock & Phipson.
Obverse with Hygeia standing, arms entwined by serpent, placing bowl on column on which hangs an oval medallion of King George III. Reverse showing a representation of a Cheltenham well, with the name of S. Moreau in exergue.
Good Extremely Fine and attractively toned. Very rare.
Mr Moreau originally intended that this medal should be struck by Royal permission to commemorate the King's visit to Cheltenham in 1788. The artist broke the two dies and it was not possible to replace them before George III's illness in 1789. On the King's recovery Mr Hancock suggested that his event could also be commemorated and produced this medal with the two dates 1788 & 1789. Struck on St George's day 1789 by Mr Phipson and Mr Hancock of Courtown on Monday 27th April. Specimens were also presented to other members of the Royal family, the British Museum and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
